LASIK is a type of Laser eye surgery for correcting various kinds of refractive errors or eye powers like Myopia (minus power), Hypermetropia (plus power) or Astigmatism (cylindrical power).LASIK utilizes Excimer Laser technology to correct refractive errors.

To treat near-sightedness/ myopia, the cornea is made steeper by removing tissue outside of the central zone of the cornea. This shifts the point of focus from beyond the retina to directly on the retina.

To treat far-sightedness/ hypermetropia, tissue is removed from the central zone of the cornea. This shifts the point of focus from in front of the retina to directly on the retina.

Often near-sightedness or far-sightedness is accompanied by astigmatism, which can be treated simultaneously by making the cornea more spherical. Many people choose LASIK instead of wearing Glasses or Contact lenses.

At Madurai Eye Center, we have one of the most advanced LASIK facility available in the world- Zeiss MEL 80 Laser. The MEL® 80 is a top quality ZEISS product from Germany, designed to make the correction of refractive errors even safer, more patient-friendly and individualized. All the parameters of this ultramodern work platform are oriented towards increasing efficiency, achieving optimum treatment results and the rapid recovery of vision. Key factors here are the very high ablation rate, the high-performance eyetracker system and customized treatment planning. This laser is tissue friendly, as it ablates minimal corneal tissue per diopter of eye power.

MEL 80 is the excimer laser with a wide field of application, including

  • Surface ablation treatments as PRK and LASEK and

  • Therapeutic treatment as Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK)

The ATLAS® 9000 from ZEISS, one of the most advanced corneal topography systems. It delivers detailed surface curvature maps of the cornea allowing the surgeon to perform an individualized laser vision correction just for you, resulting in crystal clear vision.

What tests are required before I can opt for LASIK?

The ophthalmologist would require you to undergo certain tests before you can qualify for the surgery. The most important criteria is the corneal thickness and corneal surface mapping, other criteria includes retinal and lens status. Once these are in conformity you’ll be able to undergo LASIK surgery

How old should I be to undergo LASIK procedure?

You must be above 18 to qualify for the procedure. There are some tests which are needed to be done before someone can qualify for a Lasik surgery. Also if you are above 40 then even after LASIK surgery you might require reading glasses.

The refractive surgery department also does PRK, Epilasik and phakic IOLs for cases which are not suitable for LASIK
