Diabetic Retinopathy

  • The incidence of diabetes mellitus is on the rise world over, in India more than 60 million people are suffering from it. The consequence of diabetes includes Diabetic Retinopathy(DR) which is a major cause of avoidable blindness around 12-18% of diabetic population develops Diabetic Retinopathy.
  • Early diagnosis and timely treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy reduces the risk of vision loss. Any person with diabetes can develop retinopathy. In the early stages of the disease patients will have no complaints and have good vision. When the vision worsens the disease will be in an advanced stage where treatment options will not yield the desired results. Hence it is paramount to have regular dilated eye checkups with an eye doctor as only an eye doctor alone can diagnose the disease.
  • The patients initially wouldn’t suffer from any symptoms and they will have perfect vision even though there would be bleeding and swelling of the retina. It is treatable at this stage so it is vital to get your retina examined regularly even though the vision is normal.
  • Diabetes causes the weakening of blood vessels in the body. The blood vessels in the retina are tiny and delicate and thus are more prone to undergo this deformation. Thus, these deformation and accompanied by structural changes of the retina is termed as Diabetic Retinopathy which leads to loss of vision. The treatment modalities for Diabetic retinopathy includes LASER treatment, injection into the eye (anti VEGF &steroids ) and surgery (Vitrectomy).
  • Madurai Eye Center offers the entire range of facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy. The department conducts regular patient education programs and screening programs for patients with diabetes mellitus for early detection of diabetic retinopathy. The center is a tertiary referral center for the management of advanced diabetic retinopathy.
